Spa Membership: A Card for 5 Visits or 10?

A prepaid card pays only if you use every visit before it expires, and only if the sessions you actually book cost more than the card’s price per visit. At Lụa Spa (lụa means silk), the Thẻ Năm Nhịp (Five Counts card) works out at 760,000 VND a visit and the Thẻ Mười Nhịp (Ten Counts card) at 720,000 VND. If you will come less often than that, do not buy one; paying each time is cheaper.

I am Hân, the founder. “Should I buy a card?” is the question I am asked most, and my answer always starts with a division. So does this note.

Step 1: divide the price by the visits

That per-visit figure is what you compare with the normal price.

Step 2: compare with what you would really book

Five Counts covers one session only: the 90 minute relaxing body massage, 890,000 VND on its own. Five of those cost 4,450,000 VND. The card is 3,800,000 VND, so you save 650,000 VND, or 14.6%, which is 130,000 VND a visit. Fixed session, fixed saving.

Ten Counts covers any single session up to 890,000 VND, except packages, hot stone, essential oil and the deep hydration facial. What you save depends on what you book:

• All ten at 890,000 VND (90 minute relaxing massage or the calming facial): 8,900,000 VND separately, a saving of up to 1,700,000 VND, or 19.1%. That is the most the card can save; cheaper sessions save less.
• Five gentle cleanse facials (790,000 VND) and five 90 minute massages (890,000 VND): 8,400,000 VND separately, a saving of 1,200,000 VND, or 14.3%.
• Ten 90 minute herbal head spas (720,000 VND): 7,200,000 VND, exactly the card price. No saving.
• Ten 60 minute herbal hair washes (480,000 VND): 4,800,000 VND. The card would cost you 2,400,000 VND more. Do not buy it for this.

The break-even point is an average of 720,000 VND a visit. Above it: gentle cleanse facial 790,000, calming facial 890,000, 90 minute relaxing massage 890,000. Below it: 60 minute massage 690,000, face massage 590,000, neck and shoulder 490,000, foot soak 490,000, hair wash 480,000 and 360,000. If you mostly book the second group, pay as you go.

Step 3: count how often you will really come

This is the step people skip.

Once a month. Six visits in 6 months covers Five Counts; twelve in 12 months covers Ten Counts. The card pays.

Once a quarter. Two visits in 6 months. With Five Counts you would have paid 3,800,000 VND for two massages that cost 1,780,000 VND separately. Four visits in 12 months come to 3,560,000 VND, less than half of Ten Counts. The card does not pay.

Tạ Minh Thư, a chief accountant in Phú Mỹ Hưng, first came for a lunchtime neck and shoulder massage. She then bought Five Counts, 3,800,000 VND for five 90 minute sessions, and uses it on Saturdays. Each visit costs her 760,000 VND instead of 890,000, a saving of 130,000 VND a visit and 650,000 VND on the card, because she comes regularly and uses all five within the 6 months.

When not to buy

• You will come fewer than 5 times in 6 months, or fewer than 10 in 12 months.
• You mostly want hot stone (990,000 VND), essential oil (950,000 VND), the deep hydration facial (1,090,000 VND) or a package. Ten Counts does not cover them; Five Counts covers only the 90 minute relaxing massage.
• The sessions you book usually cost under 720,000 VND.
• Your contract here may end, or you may be away for a few months: home leave, a posting elsewhere, a long Tết trip. The card is not refundable.
• You want a one-off present. A gift card fits better: you pick an amount, they pick the session.

One thing lowers the risk: the card can be passed to family or friends. If you have visits left that you cannot use in time, someone else can. Still, buy a card because you know you will come, not because of this.

How we do it at Lụa Spa

• A named therapist can be held for you. Thư keeps the same one for her Saturdays.
• Change free until 6 hours before, instead of the usual 12.
• Transferable to family or friends. Not refundable.
• Five Counts is valid 6 months, Ten Counts 12 months, from the day you buy.
• You send a request on the memberships page. The front desk confirms and sends bank transfer details; the website takes no card payment.
• When booking, put your card code in the note. The front desk checks it when confirming.

Single prices for your own sums are on the price list. Expiry, transfer and refunds are written out in the card and gift terms. The one session on Five Counts is the 90 minute relaxing body massage. If you already hold a card, book as usual.
